  • Yes. Optometrists are doctors of optometry (OD): after college, they complete four years at a college of optometry. They examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the eye, and they prescribe glasses, contact lenses and medications. Medicare recognizes doctors of optometry as physicians. Cohenmehr Optometry is an optometric practice, and all three of its doctors (Dr. Bijan Cohenmehr, OD, and his sons Dr. Kevin Cohenmehr, OD, and Dr. Brandon Cohenmehr, OD) see patients for comprehensive eye exams.

  • An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in eye and vision care, from prescribing glasses to performing complex eye surgery. An optometrist, or doctor of optometry (OD), trains differently and examines, diagnoses, treats and manages diseases, injuries and disorders of the eye. Both can give eye exams and prescribe glasses, contacts and medicines, while ophthalmologists may offer treatments, such as surgery, that optometrists don't. At Cohenmehr Optometry, procedures such as LASIK and cataract surgery are co-managed with surgical partners: the work-up before surgery and the healing checks after happen here.
